Although package holidays abroad had started in the 50's, most people in the 60's still holidayed in Great Britain. The increase in the number of private car owners meant that more people used their cars to go on holiday. In 1960, 90% of holidays were taken in Great Britain. In 2000, only 52% were.
People began to look for more adventurous things to do on holiday. The new family caravans were a different and fairly cheap way to take a holiday. Caravan sites became a familiar sight in the countryside and at seaside resorts.
Holiday camps became ever more popular. They offered entertainment-packed holidays that were an enormous success with children.
